Give back to your community – let us pick up your PET1 plastic!

Do you want to do something good for your neighborhood? When you let us collect your PET1-plastic, OurkilO will make it into new products for local use, such as sandbox shovels for the children in the neighborhood.

The project

In the current pilot, OurkilO is exploring how we can recycle PET-1 plastic into high-quality new products for local use using 3D printers.

From the collected plastic, OurkilO will make new products that will benefit local residents, such as flower pots for on the streets or sandbox shovels for the children in the playground.

Can you think of something that would improve your neighbourhood? Submit your idea now, and it might turn into reality! Or approach us to give a workshop at your school.

What do we pick up?

We pick up: cleaned fruit- and vegetable trays and other hard plastic disposable packaging with the PET1-logo, without stickers or glue residue.

How do I clean the plastic?

You can do this by hand, but you can also just wash the plastic in the dishwasher. It may come out slightly deformed, but this does not matter for the recycling process.

Why should I remove any stickers?

If the plastic contains stickers or glue residue, it cannot properly be recycled. As this project is a collaboration between two local start-ups, we do not have the manpower available to process and clean all the plastic manually.

How do I know if it is PET1 plastic?

You can find this out by checking the logo on the packaging. To find the recycling code, look for a triangular symbol made of three arrows, containing a number. If there is a 1, it is PET1 plastic.

About OurKilo

OurkilO is an award-winning initiative located in Rotterdam North. The company conducts experiments to recycle various plastic waste streams.

They try to turn this waste into new products for local use, such as flower pots and sandpit shovels for the children in the neighbourhood.

This way, valuable raw materials are reused, limiting the damage done to the environment as much as possible.

The Impact

Plastic is incredibly versatile and can last a very long time. However, we regularly throw this material away after short use. What a waste! Because there are so many types of plastic, it is difficult to properly process this waste. That is why most of our plastic is incinerated - or ends up in nature. This causes all sorts of problems.
Incinerating plastic costs a lot of energy and causes a lot of CO2 emissions. When plastic ends up in nature, it takes decades to break down. This also leads to the spread of harmful microplastics. That is why we need to find more effective ways to manage our plastic waste. For example by recycling it better. This saves more than 80% CO2 emissions, energy and water compared to incineration. In addition, less new plastic has to be produced as a result.
However, the process is not always easy. The composition of the plastic and the degree of pollution determine whether it is possible to recycle the material. In order to get better at this, OurkilO is constantly conducting experiments.
